That’s the highlight of his podcast, which returned Monday Night after RAW after a two-week hiatus.
You could clearly see Austin getting excited at the very idea pitched to him by his guest and longtime friend Paul Heyman. The last thing he said before changing the subject was “We should talk about that”. No doubt Vince McMahon is seeing $_$ as well!
Both booking a Wrestlemania match a year in advance AND booking an “Old School” Showdown at Wrestlemania’s been going on for at least the last five straight:
- Triple H vs. Sting (WM31)
- Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker (WM30)
- Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar (WM29)
- Triple H vs. The Undertaker (WM 28 and WM27)
- Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker (WM 26 and WM 25)
- Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair (WM24)
- Edge vs. The Undertaker (WM24)
…I could go on. While yes Brock Lesnar spent 8 years away from WWE, so did The Rock yet he was booked in two straight matches with John Cena (WM28 and WM29), the latter for both the WWE Title and as it turned out was a work to help Cena. I didn’t find out until much later but this was around the same time Cena’s affair leaked online and the following messy divorce happened–both of which the WWE swept under the rug. The “Golden Boy” and “Super Cena” taglines are an indirect way of referencing his dirty laundry.
Oh, speaking of Brock Lesnar: Heyman confirmed Lesnar is scheduled to return “very soon”. I take that to mean one of two things: Either he’ll crash Money in the Bank and take out Seth Rollins (most likely) during the match’s climax (DQ Win for Rollins) or he’ll show up the RAW after Money in the Bank to set up the promised rematch with Rollins for the title (or just Rollins if he retains, which I assume).
I am also going with the assumption when Lesnar returns, it’s either as a Face or he does a Face turn. Otherwise the Authority wouldn’t be falling apart. Strong Authority = Heel Lesnar. Weak Authority = Face Lesnar.
Getting back to the main subject, The Rock said after WM31 he’s in talks with Triple H to book a match for WM32. That said, WWE needs its attitude-era vets past and present (Triple H, Shawn Michaels, The Rock, Stone Cold, The Undertaker, Kane, Goldust, etc.) WAY more than the other way around. While yes it’s free advertising for them to promote whatever they’re currently doing, their appearances also bring in new revenue sources with them. Remember the media coverage The Rock’s WWE Title win two years ago got?
Don’t get it twisted: The Rock’s not exactly hurting for money (San Andreas says hi), Triple H is the Director of Talent Relations, the owner of NXT AND Vince’s hand-picked successor to WWE, ‘Taker get paid full-time to wrestle once a year AND all of these guys plus Chris Jericho and The New Age Outlaws were integral in WWE winning the Monday Night Wars.
So as of right now, we definitely have two matches on the card for WM32. Fans want a third on top of that so…yeah.
- The Rock vs. Triple H
- Brock Lesnar vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin
- The Undertaker vs. Sting (Proposed)
The third one…that’s what fans wanted this year. Sting’s been doing alot of PR work since Wrestlemania but he’s said he’s open to doing more matches. If we don’t see ‘Taker/Sting next year I could definitely see it being Sting vs. Bray Wyatt or ‘Taker vs. Bryan. ‘Taker said a few years ago he’d like to work with D-Bry and Wyatt has already proven he can work with anybody =D
