WWE announced earlier this afternoon Cody Rhodes has been released as of today. The son of the late Dusty Rhodes had been with the company since 2007 and is also the younger brother of WWE Superstar Goldust.
Both Rhodes brothers apparently walked out on last week’s Smackdown taping. Cody’s release has no bearing on his brother’s status in the WWE or his wife’s, who works as a ring announcer for the company. Based on what various websites are reporting so far, Cody had apparently been thinking of leaving WWE for some time.
Cody has promised to explain why he asked to leave the company soon when word first broke on Friday. Now that his release is official, it’s simply a matter of when. One can only speculate until then. Personally, I think he’s making the decision to walk away from wrestling while he’s able to choose to do so. He knows too many former wrestlers whose careers were shortened or ended due to injury.
